Your Questions About Inclusive Performing Arts Sessions in North Yorkshire, Answered

Yes. Lucy's Aurora Arts welcomes adults of all ages. Many adults attend to rebuild confidence, manage anxiety, or explore creativity for the first time. There is no upper age limit and no assumption that performing arts is only for children. Adults are genuinely welcome.

About Sessions

A one-to-one performing arts session is a private, individually tailored creative session covering dance, drama, singing, or storytelling with no other participants present. Every session is built entirely around the individual's needs, pace, and comfort. No prior experience or specific ability level is required.

The first session is purely exploratory, no targets, no assessments, no pressure. Lucy uses it to understand how the participant engages and what feels comfortable. For children with anxiety or SEND, the first session is often shorter and led entirely by the child's cues.

Sessions typically run between 30 and 60 minutes, agreed with Lucy based on the individual's needs and capacity. Shorter sessions suit younger children or those with sensory sensitivities. Length is never fixed, it is always shaped around what works best for the person attending.

No. Each session adapts to the individual on the day. Lucy can provide a consistent routine for those who need predictability, or a more flexible structure for others. The session plan is always a starting point, never a rigid schedule that gets followed regardless of how someone is feeling.

Sessions cover four disciplines: dance and movement, drama and role play, singing and vocal expression, and storytelling and creativity. Sessions can focus on one discipline or draw from several. No previous experience in any of them is needed.

Sessions take place across a range of settings, community spaces, and home visits where appropriate. Lucy is based in Thirsk and travels across North Yorkshire, covering up to 50 miles. The most suitable setting is agreed during the initial free conversation.

SEND & Neurodivergent

Yes. Sessions are specifically designed to welcome autistic children. They are structured around sensory comfort, predictability, and personal pace with no group dynamics, no unexpected demands, and no pressure to perform. Lucy has extensive experience working with autistic young people.

Yes. The one-to-one format suits children with ADHD well, there are no group pressures, and sessions follow the child's energy and interest rather than fighting against it. Lucy works with neurodivergent learners' natural patterns, using movement and creative play as tools that match how they engage.

No. A diagnosis is not required. Many children and adults who come to Lucy's Aurora Arts are undiagnosed or mid-assessment. What matters is the individual's needs — not a label. A free initial conversation with Lucy will clarify whether sessions are the right fit.

Yes. Lucy has experience working with non-verbal children and those with limited communication. Dance, movement, and storytelling are inherently non-verbal disciplines, making them powerful tools for individuals who communicate beyond speech. Sessions are adapted using visual cues and physical prompts where needed.

Yes. Lucy works with children and adults with a wide range of complex needs and learning disabilities. Every session adapts in real time to the participant's abilities and comfort. Visit the Complex Needs & Learning Disabilities page for more detail.

Yes. Children with an EHCP are welcome. Sessions can be structured to complement EHCP goals, and Lucy is experienced in working alongside other professionals in a child's support plan. Get in touch to discuss how sessions can align with your child's plan.

Yes. Sensory comfort is a core part of every session. Environments are calm and low-stimulus. There is no unexpected noise, sudden physical contact, or requirement to engage in anything uncomfortable. Lucy discusses sensory needs before the first session and builds everything around them.

Parent Concerns

Anxiety is one of the most common reasons families come to Lucy's Aurora Arts — it is not a barrier. Sessions are judgment-free and led entirely by the child's comfort level. Nothing new is introduced before a child is ready. Many anxious children find sessions become one of the few environments where anxiety genuinely reduces.

This is agreed individually with Lucy. For some children, a parent being present initially helps. For others, stepping back creates more space to engage. There is no fixed rule — Lucy will always discuss what arrangement is likely to work best for your child.

A difficult day is never treated as a problem. If a child arrives overwhelmed, Lucy adapts — a quieter session, a change of activity, or simply a calm space for that day. No session is ever forced. The relationship and safe space are maintained regardless.

No. There are no shows, showcases, or audience events. Sessions exist entirely for the benefit of the participant — not for an external output. If a child eventually wants to share their work, that can be explored. But it is never an expectation or a goal.

Outcomes & Progress

Performing arts builds confidence by giving you a safe space to try things, make mistakes, and discover capability — without judgment or comparison. Over time, self-expression through dance, drama, and singing develops a sense of identity and self-worth that carries into everyday life.

Movement and creative expression give children a physical outlet for feelings they cannot always express verbally. Drama and storytelling let them explore emotions in a safe, fictional context. Many children with SEND profiles find that regular creative sessions reduce anxiety and improve self-regulation in other areas of life.

Progress is never measured through grades or benchmarks. Lucy looks for personal markers — greater comfort in sessions, more confident self-expression, less anxiety on arrival. These observations are shared informally with parents. Progress is always measured against where a participant started, not an external standard.

There is no fixed timeline. Some children show noticeable shifts within a few sessions. For those with complex needs or significant anxiety, meaningful change develops over weeks or months. The work is cumulative — the relationship built over time is often as important as any individual session.
